(SHORTIE) Overcoming Fear To Start your Own Podcast

In this episode of the podcast, host Katy Simpson tackles the common fear and anxiety that many people have about starting their own podcast. With a warm and encouraging tone, she aims to empower listeners to overcome their fears and take the leap into podcasting.

Katy begins by acknowledging that fear of starting a podcast is a common struggle. She dives into the reasons behind this fear, including negative perceptions of one's own voice, lack of confidence in subject matter expertise, and the nerves that come with performing. By addressing these issues head-on, Katy hopes to provide guidance and practical tips to help listeners gain the confidence they need to get started.

One of Katy's main recommendations is to start small and take baby steps. She suggests recording and listening to one's own thoughts as practice, without the pressure of an audience. By doing this, listeners can become more comfortable with their own voices and gain confidence in their ability to speak on their chosen topics. Katie also emphasizes the importance of proper planning, outlining topics, format, and scheduling recording sessions to avoid stress and last-minute scrambling.

To make the technical aspects of podcasting more accessible, Katie recommends using user-friendly tools. She highlights the Alitu platform, which allows for recording, editing, and publishing all in one place. She also suggests the affordable Samsung Q2U microphone as a good starting option for those new to podcasting.

In addition to practical tips, Katie encourages listeners to network with other podcasters. Finding a co-host or inviting guests to participate can provide support and help maintain momentum. Platforms like Podmatch can be a useful resource for connecting with other podcasters and collaborating on episodes.

Finally, Katie emphasizes the importance of embracing imperfection. She reassures listeners that their audience will appreciate authenticity over perfection and reminds them that making mistakes is a natural part of the learning process. She shares a pre-recording ritual of taking deep breaths, smiling through the eyes, and letting out a relaxing sigh to help calm the nervous system and create a more relaxed and confident vocal delivery.

With her practical tips, warm encouragement, and step-by-step guidance, Katie empowers listeners to overcome their fears and start their own podcasting journey. Whether you're struggling with the fear of your own voice or feeling overwhelmed by the technical aspects, this episode provides the tools and motivation you need to get started.

(SHORTIE) Finding Confidence on Camera: Tips for Video and Podcasting with PTSD

This shortie episode provides tips for creating videos and podcasts for those struggling with PTSD. It was recorded outside in a beautiful bluebell woodland in England.  The sound quality is not the best but I wanted you to be able to hear the relaxing birdsong in the background.  It has also been edited to keep it short and precise for those with PTSD who may struggle to stay focussed for longer periods.

Tip 1 is to practice a lot in a comfortable and supportive environment to feel comfortable on camera. Tip 2 is to have an encouraging friend to interview to feel less pressure if you forget what to say. Tip 3 is to choose a subject you're passionate about that you can talk about for hours without worry. Tip 4 is to be authentic and real with your audience, acknowledging if you're not feeling it one day.

The bonus tip is breathing techniques. Specifically, the podcast episode recommends belly breathing where you breathe in deeply through your nose, holding it for a second, then exhaling slowly through pursed lips making a whooshing sound. Doing this calms your vagus nerve which regulates your parasympathetic nervous system response to feel more relaxed.

In summary, the tips are to practice a lot in a safe space, have a supportive friend to interview, choose a topic you're passionate about, be real with your audience, and use deep belly breathing to physiologically calm yourself before recording videos or podcasts when dealing with PTSD. The goal is to feel comfortable, not worry about forgetting content, discuss an engaging subject, and regulate your nervous system through breathing.

(SHORTIE) 5 Game-Changing Podcasting Hacks for Busy Female Entrepreneurs

In this episode, we dive into five essential hacks for busy female entrepreneurs to effectively manage their podcasts. Katy shares her personal experiences and insights on how to maximize productivity while scaling your business through podcasting.

The first hack discussed is batching, a technique that involves recording, editing, and publishing content in batches. By dedicating 1-2 days per month to record multiple episodes, you can ensure that you have a backlog of episodes ready to go weeks in advance. Alternatively, if time permits, you can complete each step (record, edit, publish) for one episode at a time, with each episode taking approximately 1.5-2 hours to complete. Katy even offers her own workflow details upon request.

Outsourcing editing is the second hack recommended for busy entrepreneurs seeking to maintain a high production value for their podcasts. Basic editing tasks, such as trimming silence and filler words, can be time-consuming. To streamline the process, our host suggests investing in a good microphone and audio interface, as well as utilizing AI tools like Descript and Alitu for automated transcription and editing.

Creating templates for show notes, episode descriptions, and scripts is the third hack discussed. By utilizing tools like Captivate FM, you can automate guest details and descriptions, ensuring a consistent format for every episode.

The fourth hack focuses on utilizing scheduling tools on podcast platforms to plan and schedule future publication dates. This hack has the added benefit of helping busy entrepreneurs stay on track with their podcasting goals, even during times when they may feel overwhelmed or have other commitments. It is particularly helpful for those dealing with ADHD or health issues, as it ensures a consistent flow of new episodes for listeners.

The fifth and final hack explores the concept of repurposing content from your podcast into various formats, such as written articles, graphics, or videos. By using AI tools, you can transform your podcast episodes into high-quality content that can be monetized through courses or other formats that cater to different audiences and consumption preferences.

In conclusion, this episode highlights five essential hacks for busy female entrepreneurs looking to efficiently manage their podcasts while scaling their businesses. Our host encourages experimentation with different methods as she continues to gain experience in the podcasting world. So, tune in now to discover how you can optimize your podcasting journey and reach new heights in your business endeavors.

(SHORTIE) Monetizing Your Podcast: The Top 5 Methods for Busy Female Entrepreneurs

In this episode of the podcast, host Katy shares five easy ways for busy female entrepreneurs to monetize their podcasts. The first method she discusses is sponsorships and advertising. Katy explains that podcasters don't need a huge number of listeners to attract brand sponsorships. She advises reading sponsorship ads in an engaging way to captivate the audience. Sponsorship prices are typically based on listener numbers, and there are websites that connect companies with podcasters in similar niches, showing estimated earnings per listener.

The second method Katy mentions is affiliate marketing. She suggests promoting products or services related to the podcast topic and earning a commission per sale through a unique affiliate link. For an entrepreneurship podcast, this could involve partnering with business software companies or book publishers. She emphasizes the importance of only promoting products and services that are genuinely helpful.

The third method Katy proposes is a subscription model. She suggests offering premium bonus content, such as behind-the-scenes extras, to listeners in exchange for a monthly fee. Examples of bonus content could include Zoom hangouts or pre-interview chats. Katie also mentions the option of newsletters or private podcasts through platforms like Behiiv, Hello Audio, or Kajabi.

The fourth method Katy recommends is selling products or services. As an entrepreneur herself, she advises promoting a relevant book, online course, or other offerings. Katy suggests including a discount, deadline, and repeating the easy purchase link both in the show notes and verbally several times to boost sales.

Lastly, Katy discusses the fifth method, which is crowd-funding and donations. She mentions platforms like Patreon that allow listeners to financially support creators in exchange for perks such as exclusive content, merchandise, or experiences. Setting up profiles on these platforms is described as simple. Katy also suggests creating podcast-branded merchandise as a fun option.

Throughout the episode, Katy emphasizes the importance of keeping the audience's interests in mind when choosing a monetization strategy. She recommends repeating offers at least seven times to boost awareness and only promoting ads that provide value to listeners.

The podcast ends on a lighthearted note with some bloopers from the host.

Finding Your Podcasting Rhythm: Weekly or Bi Weekly Episodes?

In this episode of the podcast, Katy dives into the topic of how often podcasters should release new episodes in order to build and engage their audience effectively. She starts off by emphasizing the importance of consistency and recommends starting with a weekly or bi-weekly schedule. By sticking to a routine, podcasters can establish a loyal listener base and avoid burnout, especially in the initial 10 episodes. However, Katy also stresses that quality should always be prioritized over quantity. It is crucial for podcasters to take their time and produce high-quality, polished episodes that they can be proud of. Rushing out content frequently may lead to lower quality episodes that fail to attract and retain listeners. Additionally, doing SEO research for episode titles and topics is highlighted as an important step to attract the right audience. Understanding listener habits is another key aspect discussed by Katy. It is essential for podcasters to consider when and where their target audience is most likely to consume their content. By adjusting episode length and release days based on typical listening scenarios, podcasters can optimize their reach and engagement. Resource management is also touched upon in this episode. Katy suggests considering recording methods such as batch recording or recording live to streamline the production process. Evaluating the editing workload and determining if raw recordings are sufficient can also help in managing resources efficiently. Lastly, Katy emphasizes the importance of balance when it comes to growth strategies. While quick growth through frequent releases may be tempting, it is essential to prioritize sustainability. Gradual, steady growth over time is recommended to build a long-term podcast and avoid burnout. In summary, Katy provides valuable insights and recommendations for new podcasters. Consistency, quality, understanding the audience, and efficient resource management are all highlighted as crucial factors for building and engaging an audience in a sustainable way. By following these guidelines, podcasters can set themselves up for success and create a podcast that resonates with their target audience. ——————————————————————————————————

(SHORTIE) What Essentials You Need to Start A Podcast

Ready to launch your own podcast but not sure where to start?

Let me to help you kickstart your podcasting journey!

1. Choosing the Right Microphone

  • I advise against relying solely on your smartphone or laptop's built-in mic. While it's better than nothing, the audio quality may not meet your expectations. For a higher quality option, I recommend the Samsung Q2U microphone. It's affordable and offers clearer audio than a phone mic. Plus, it comes bundled with a free pop filter or windshield to minimize unwanted noises.

2. Podcast Recording and Editing Software

  • To start recording and editing your podcast, I suggest free apps like Anchor and Podbean. Anchor (now owned by Spotify) and Podbean both provide basic editing features without the need for additional equipment. Anchor even offers a library of free music tracks that can be added to your podcasts. It’s easy to repurpose your content all over the place, particularly if you start with a live video.

3. Just Start Recording

  • My most important piece of advice is to simply start recording. Even if it's just speaking to yourself for a few minutes each day, this allows you to get comfortable speaking without visual feedback and practice your presentation skills. You don't need elaborate topics; chatting about your day is sufficient. The key is to take action and not get caught up in overthinking technical details or content ideas.

4. Regular Practice Makes Perfect

  • Regular practice is the key to improving your podcasting skills. Start with a few minutes of daily recording and gradually increase the duration. Over time, you'll become more comfortable with full-length episodes and develop your unique style. Remember, it's all about gaining experience and building confidence.
